No suitable source or sink
A site with only very cold sources and very high-temperature demand may require a lift that produces poor performance. A large waste-heat figure has little value without a simultaneous use.
Too few operating hours
Seasonal or sporadic loads may not justify installed cost. Storage can bridge short timing gaps but cannot create annual demand.
Integration dominates
Grid reinforcement, production shutdowns, hygiene separation, hazardous areas, space or noise can make a technically possible project impractical. The correct conclusion may be to improve heat recovery, lower process temperatures or wait for a planned plant upgrade.
The source and sink do not coincide
A large waste-heat source has little project value when it is available in a season or shift with no useful heat demand. Short timing differences can sometimes be bridged by a buffer tank. Daily or seasonal mismatches require much larger storage or another sink and may defeat the economics.
Annual megawatt-hour totals conceal this problem. The screen must compare intervals and show curtailed source heat, unmet sink heat and storage state through time.
The process requires too much lift
A cold source and high-temperature sink can produce weak COP, reduced capacity and a narrow compressor envelope. Selecting a machine with a higher catalogue maximum does not remove the penalty.
Before rejecting the opportunity, test lower sink temperatures, warmer sources, direct preheating and split duties. If the remaining lift still produces poor performance, an electric boiler, fuel switch or process change may be more appropriate.
Integration risk exceeds the energy value
Hygiene separation, hazardous areas, production shutdowns, corrosion, noise, space and grid reinforcement can outweigh fuel savings. A technically workable cycle may still be a poor plant project.
The decision should include lost-production exposure and operational complexity. A project that depends on an unrealistic shutdown window or constant operator intervention is not ready to proceed.
The baseline is too uncertain
If the displaced boiler duty, source heat or operating hours cannot be measured, savings cannot be forecast or verified with confidence. Installing more meters and returning after a production season can be the correct next step.
Stopping at this point protects the investment case. It also produces a clear measurement plan rather than a speculative equipment request.
