Industrial heat pumps for steam production

How vapour compression, steam compression and boiler integration can provide process steam.

Two routes to useful steam

A high-temperature heat pump can heat feedwater and generate steam in a dedicated exchanger. Mechanical vapour recompression can instead compress low-pressure process vapour so that its latent heat is reused at a higher pressure. The best route depends on whether a clean vapour stream already exists.

Steam quality and pressure matter

A steam project must define pressure at the user, condensate return, water treatment, turndown and contamination risk. Distribution losses and pressure reductions can hide opportunities to decentralise heat at a lower temperature.

Direct generation and steam compression

Closed-cycle systems can raise an external heat source and evaporate treated feedwater. Open-cycle mechanical vapour recompression starts with process vapour and increases its pressure so that it condenses at a useful temperature. The second route can require much less lift when suitable vapour already exists.

Turboden describes direct steam generation up to 3 bar absolute and 150°C, with mechanical vapour recompression extending to higher pressures. Those are supplier capabilities for tailored systems, not a universal design envelope.

Account for the whole steam system

Map pressure at the users, distribution loss, flash steam, condensate return and pressure-reducing stations. A plant may obtain a better first project by serving low-temperature users directly and reducing central steam demand rather than recreating the entire boiler header electrically.

Keep backup explicit

Many first projects retain an existing boiler for peaks, startup, maintenance or duties beyond the heat pump's temperature range. The controls must prevent short cycling and assign base load deliberately rather than allowing the boiler to erase expected running hours.
