Refrigerants and F-gas requirements

How the EU F-gas regime affects equipment selection, servicing and long-term refrigerant risk.

Reviewed 21 August 2026 · Check time-sensitive information before acting

The regulation has changed

Regulation (EU) 2024/573 replaces the previous F-gas framework and tightens the phase-down and product restrictions for fluorinated gases. Dates and exceptions vary by equipment type, capacity and safety requirements.

Refrigerant choice is an engineering decision

Ammonia, carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons, water and fluorinated refrigerants have different pressure, toxicity, flammability, temperature and efficiency characteristics. Natural refrigerant does not mean risk-free. Charge location, occupancy and hazardous-area design matter.

Plan the service life

Selection should consider future availability, leakage detection, trained personnel, recovery obligations, spare parts and the possibility of restrictions during the asset life. Confirm the exact legal position with competent specialists for the proposed system.
